Famous from the Internet - My first VLOG!

MY FIRST VLOG FOR THE STAFF REPUBLIC

Why i love BEcause and The Staff Republic!

I recently went on a BEcause and Staff Republic Interview day! I loved doing the interviewing – I felt a bit like Simon Cowell sitting between Phillipa (Danni) and Sophie (Cheryl) from Because HQ!

BEcause are one of the few agencies out there that are particular about who they employ! They like to meet all the staff face-to-face, and develop a good working relationship with their staff! I remember my interview with Because and I was quite nervous – but I got through it! (Thank’s Sally).

My life would be different if I hadn’t have gone to my interview with BEcause. I probably wouldn’t still be in the promotions and field marketing game game! Lets face it – its a tough industry to do long term! At that point I had been working as a Divisional Event Manager on a HUGE campaign for a supermarket – but I felt undervalued. They hadn’t budgeted properly – and in the space of six months cut my day rate by £30 – in £10 increments – while at the same time increasing my work load! Its not a great moral builder! No praise when things went right and less money for it too!

Then came along BEcause – who swept me off my promotional feet! They restored my faith in Brand Experience and Promotions! My first campaign was The Biggest Round and I was territory manager! The training day way in Warwick and we stayed in the Hilton – but I would have been happy with anything after months of staying in ‘barely’ hotels!

I met the BEcause staff, and was amazed at how nice and friendly and helpful everyone was. The campaign started off – and in the 13 weeks that I was on it – not once did I feel like I was on my own. If I needed to double check something, Phillipa was on the phone to help me out! It was a new world!

From there, things have got better, and I work for BEcause whenever I can! On occasion if i’m offered a job with another agency – I have been known to check if BEcause have anything for me before I book on just so I can work for them!

Then came along The Staff Republic – and when they brought me and the other guys in to talk about what we would want from an agency – it was great to know that they cared what the people who worked for them thought – to the point of naming the agency (that was me!).

I was going to talk about how to get through a BEcause and Staff Republic interview! But that will have to be next week!

I love BEcause…. BEcause they Care, BEcause they are loyal, BEcause they make me feel valued, BEcause they listen and BEcause they respect me, (and BEcause they always pay me on time)!

Thanks BEcause!

Behind the Marketing: Music

Ever wondered why certain stores play the music they do? Or why adverts use the music they do?

Myself, like all promotional staff, have spent time in a store and noticed that they play the same music at the same time everyday. And theres not a single person doing promotional work who doesn’t prefer one store over another because of the music! Some stores even play different music on different days and at different times depending on what customers they have - e.g club music on Saturday afternoon gets people in the mood to go out, and they want to dress to impress, so they spend more!

There has been loads of research into this and things like loudness, tempo and genre of music have massive effects on how long consumers spend in shops and restaurants, how much they purchase or consume, and whether they view brands or products favorably or unfavorably.

For example people in supermarkets that are playing loud music make just as many purchases despite shopping for a shorter period of time. So basically you buy the same amount, but theres more purchases per minute within the store in comparison to slow music. Another interesting fact is that restaurants who play slower music have customers who spend more time eating and drinking.

An experiment was conducted where slower music was played, supermarkets saw significantly higher overall sales volumes, with one supermarket study reporting an increase in sales of 38% in the slow music condition. This is unsurprising, as consumers who are moving more slowly are more inclined to see additional items they would like. Restaurants playing slow music had longer waits for tables and much higher customer bar bills. Interestingly, although restaurant patrons did not eat more in the slow music condition, they drank far more.

People often associate brands with songs from TV adverts…Coca-Cola with ‘if I could teach the world to sing’ or McDonald’s with Justin Timberlakes I’m Lovin it’ and GAP with ‘Lovetrain’. Sugarbabes released ‘Here come the girls’ after the original was on a Marks and Spencer’s advert, and everybody loved it! Think Levis and Spaceman the only number for one Babylon Zoo - without Levi’s Jeans - where would they be? Certainly not living off royalties!

When you have a big event on and theres some annoying track playing in the background, (only because you have heard it 100 times), that particular song has probably been chosen to get people over to you, be interested in what you are saying and generally wanting to find out more out the product!

Wind, rain or fire… promotional staff should use their initiative to deal with anything!

image

So, I’m waiting for my iPhone to come at the moment! It’s been three weeks due to the fact that there was a fire at O2! They clearly think that its a good enough reason to stop working…. i personally disagree!

When i’ve been doing promotions in the past, I have to contend with fires, floods and gale force winds. It’s never stopped me getting the job done… you just need to adjust to the situation you’re in - and pretty much get on with it. If you’re on a promotion where its so windy that your tent is being blown down, its not a reason to pack up and go home really…. is it?????? No! you just need to take the tent down (if you can) or go and get something to anchor it. I’m pretty sure the agency will let you claim back the money for whatever you use.

Promotions has always been about initiative for me. You never really know what could happen on a job; but there is no point in getting flustered about it. If you’ve been trained properly and have a bit of gusto, you can deal with anything. It might not always be the ideal situation, but its better that giving in! So next time your day doesn’t go quite to plan… step back and take a look at the bigger picture, and do what you have to do to make it work!
